Bound by water and comprised of a surprisingly large amount of parkland, Port Royal is an idyllic residential community adjacent to the amenities and schools of Queensborough.
And it’s about to get even more enviable.
The City of New Westminster has proposed the Q2Q bridge linking Port Royal with New Westminster Quay across the north arm of the Fraser River.
This pedestrian and bicycle crossing will connect residents with the buzzing culture and economy of downtown New Westminster in 20 minutes, not to mention providing access to more transportation options with several bus routes and the SkyTrain station close. Leave your car at home and bike to work or walk to the historical centre. Buy fresh groceries at the market, visit the collection of art galleries, or enjoy the view along the riverfront walkway – there is no doubt the bridge will add to quality of life.
While changing the dynamics, the proposed bascule bridge – which is essentially a drawbridge – will allow the river activity to continue. It will even be capable of transporting emergency vehicles if the Queensborough Bridge is blocked with traffic. It’s an exciting time to live along the Fraser River.
