The Design Philosophy Behind Canoe

Canoe, a collection of ground-oriented homes in Port Royal, has received a warm reception since opening last fall. Triplexes, townhomes, row houses, and single family homes complete the variety of residences in this portion of the master-planned community.

Understanding the importance of first impressions, each of our display homes are designed to make homebuyers feel welcome, while communicating the features we are most proud of.

In our recent video series, Aragon’s Interior Designer, Maria Zoubos, shared her philosophy behind design: She starts with an inspiration, whether it be an image, an object, or a piece of art, that will set the tone and define the parameters for the decisions to be made throughout the process.

To express Canoe’s message of ‘comfortable family living with style,’ Maria turned to the Fraser for display home inspiration. “Being next to a working river, you see tug boats hauling wood logs, or shipping containers in transit. These two elements of wood and metal were the source of inspiration for the home, lending itself to more of an industrial design concept.” While metal pieces can often make a space feel cold and uninviting, layering furniture with wool cushions, blankets, area rugs, and other accessories made the space feel like a home. “That’s always the goal – making sure the design is in line with how people actually want to live,” she explains. Her visions of wood are linked to the paneling surrounding the fireplace in the living room – a rich and warm feature sourced and manufactured in South America that comes standard in each home.

Every element in the display homes establishes who the family living there is and how they use the space, which is why selection of décor is a precise process and a purposeful exercise in design. Maria attributes her décor finds to a number of sources, traveling across the Lower Mainland to find pieces that tie the story together. South Granville is a great starting point, with a peruse through stores such as West Elm, Anthropologie, and 18Karat. For unique finds, she visits Mint and Fullhouse Modern in the Armoury District.
